As a practising barrister, Paul has over 10 years of experience of conducting litigation in criminal and civil cases before both domestic and international courts and tribunals. 

At the domestic level Paul is an established practitioner of immigration, refugee and human rights law, making daily appearances on behalf of appellants before the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal, High Court and Court of Appeal.  For further information on Paul's immigration law practice please see www.immigrationbarrister.co.uk

At the international level, Paul has the following human rights litigation experience:

  • Engaged by the Public Interest Litigation Clinic in Kansas City, USA to draft an application to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in a case involving a mentally retarded prisoner sentenced to death in Arizona (Martinez-Villareal v. United States);
  • Engaged by the Kurdish Human Rights Project to represent a leading Armenian opposition political figure in proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights alleging unlawful deprivation of liberty and torture whilst in police custody (Virabyan v. Armenia);
  • Engaged by the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre to advise on and amend a draft full application to the European Court of Human Rights in a case involving ten Chechen applicants who alleged violations of the ECHR as a result of the abduction and disappearance of their family members by Russian state security forces (Khutsayev and others v. Russia);
  • Engaged by the Kurdish Human Rights Project to represent a Kurdish conscript in proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights alleging violations of the right to fair trial and freedom of expression (Demir v. Turkey);
