 What is a barrister?

Barristers are self-employed lawyers, most of whom are specialist advocates and advisors in particular areas of law.  We are independent and objective and trained to advise clients on the strengths as well as the weaknesses of their case. We have specialist knowledge and experience in and out of courts/tribunals which can make a substantial difference to the outcome of a case.  We carry out all our work personally.

Why should I instruct an immigration barrister?

From assisting with initial applications to the Home Offfice through to providing representation at appeal hearings, specialist immigration barristers provide a high quality comprehensive service of advice, drafting and advocacy to all persons affected by immigration law.

In many cases early advice can save the cost and worry of an unnecessary appeal hearing.  When preparing an application to the Home Office, advice from a barrister on the evidence that needs to be included in support of an application will greatly strengthen your hand.  You might even consider submitting a written advice from a barrister on the merits of your case as part of your application.

If you want to challenge a decision of the Home Office at a tribunal hearing, you may require advice on your prospects of success or how best to prepare your case for the tribunal hearing.  Predicting what a tribunal will decide about your immigration appeal requires experience of having been in court. Barristers are specialists at conducting appeal hearings.

At a tribunal hearing, a well-argued case will impress the tribunal.  A barrister's specialist training in advocacy, legal knowledge and courtroom experience could make a big difference to the outcome of your case.

How much will a barrister cost?

Legal aid may cover the services of a barrister, but if you are not eligible for legal aid, you will need to negotiate a fee you can afford.  Because most barristers operate with low overheads, their rates are competitive. Whether you are legally aided or paying privately, the quality of service is assured.

How do I instruct an immigration barrister?

At present, immigration barristers can only be instructed through a solicitor.  If you would like further information, or to be put in touch with a suitable solicitor, please contact me.
